Want to write for Clippings.me?

In 2015, we're relaunching the Clippings.me Blog with a selection of stories aimed at freelancers and graduating journalists. We want clippings.me users - who know best what they want to read about - to provide the content, so read on if you're interested in contributing.

What are we looking for?

We're looking for a range of article styles, including how-tos, op-eds, original narratives, satire and round-ups. Content needs to be related to journalism, the media or freelance life (basically, the kind of thing clippings.me users will want to read). We expect most articles to be no more than 500 words in length, and we'll be looking for quirky, shareable ideas which will be of interest to clippings.me users from around the world. If you're looking for some inspiration, some of our favorite news/media/tech blogs include 10,000 Words, Poynter, Valleywag and Romenesko.

What aren't we looking for?

Purely because we receive so many, it's probably worth avoiding the following pitches:

  • Articles with a super-niche interest - we're writing for a global audience.
  • Articles about your general personal experiences in becoming a journalist. Everyone has a story and everyone's story is unique - for this type of article to work you'll need to have done something pretty incredible. Instead, consider what you learned which you believe is unique and may help others - it'll make a far more compelling pitch.
  • Anything not about journalism, freelancing or the media. Food, politics and sport are not the preserve of the blog.
  • Over-generalized 'How to do X' stories. How-tos are fine, but make them really specific and ensure that you're a genuine authority on the subject. 'How to become a freelancer' really shouldn't be attempted in a 500-word post.

How do I pitch?

Use the form here. Remember that we receive a lot of submissions, so make your pitch short and punchy - sell your article idea with a hook and give a quick overview of the theme.

Do you pay?

Yes! We'll pay $0.50 per word if your pitch is selected for publication. You'll need to fill out a form with your bank details and you'll be paid within 30 days of your article's publication.

What else do I get?

Apart from the payment AND the satisfaction of seeing your name on our blog? Well, we'll publicize your article, and we'll link to your clippings.me profile. And maybe we'll send you a Christmas card.
